The Position

Transportation Purchasing Director

Job Summary

The North America Transportation Purchasing Manager is in charge of leading all modes of transportation in the region, which includes:

 

  • Leadership over all three major transportation modes – truck, rail and ocean

  • Focus on ocean freight, container shipping and drayage, as this leader will act as category manager, with an indirect relationship to the global category director

  • Lead and consult in all other logistics-related areas, such as warehousing, intermodal transport, cost-to-serve modeling, TMS, software support, etc.

  • Drive on-going improvements with major providers through Supplier Relationship Management process (SRM), including periodic meetings which include problem solving, cost reduction, maintenance objectives, plant shutdown support, etc.

 

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and lead the transportation strategy for NA (all modes) and Ocean for SA

  • Identify, manage and execute sourcing projects in transport-related areas within North America to drive down costs, optimize rates, reduce accessorial costs and ensure excellent, uninterrupted service to Imerys’ plant operations. 

  • Collaborate directly with the business Supply Chain  and Operations leadership and teams to optimize overall logistics costs to the plants

  • Based on direction from Group Energy Manager and Global Purchasing, follow and implement purchasing policy, category strategy/processes, and related purchasing and transportation management tools/software. 

  • Act as a pulse check and voice of the internal customer (site manager/operations/supply chain leaders) to the ongoing category management approach of the Transportation category.

  • Develop key regional supplier relationship management (SRM) program under the umbrella of global Purchasing SRM program, ensuring integration of these programs with the Business Area priorities.

  • Manage associated regional contract, price application/control, periodic contract review (to quantify supplier performance)

 

Skills and Attributes Requirements:

  • Established expertise in the broad transportation sector in North America (Rail, Truck & Ocean), and Ocean for South America with an industrial emphasis; understands global transportation/logistics drivers.  

  • Experience in leading regional projects based on category management concepts and group purchasing approach desired

  • Extensive experience negotiating with providers of all modes of transportation - Rail; Ocean; Truck

  • Excellent, demonstrated collaboration and relationship-building skills required; relationships will be extensive

  • Ability to collaborate with strong, defined technical resources, engineers and leaders, as well as plant operations leader

  • Strong project management skills

 

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain (or related field) required

  • 10-15 years’ advanced experience in transportation purchasing, with direct experience in management of all transportation modes is required

  • Experience in leading regional projects based on category management concepts and Corporate purchasing approach desired
