The Position

Maintenance & Reliability Engineer

Job Summary

Based at our flagship manufacturing plant in Lompoc, CA, Imerys is hiring a Maintenance / Reliability Engineer. In this role, you will be responsible for implementing advanced reliability tools and work processes to support the reliability goals of the site by applying engineering principles, statistical data analysis, and supporting work processes.

Location: Lompoc, CA (Relocation assistance provided)

You will develop and facilitate execution of the maintenance team’s efforts toward a continuously-improving Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) program. This involves maximizing asset reliability using the key components of a maintenance management system such as but not limited to: failure modes, and effects (, and criticality) analysis (FMEA/FMECA), root cause failure analysis (RCFA), predictive testing and condition monitoring methodologies, and a strategic combination of time-based, condition-based, reliability-based, compliance-based, and run-to-fail objectives. All of this activity and the results shall be managed using the company’s computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) or enterprise asset manager (EAM), such as TabWare or SAP. He/she will also manage capital and expense engineering projects of varying scope & complexity where equipment or process reliability are the primary justification. All of the above is to be developed in accordance with the company’s applicable cGMP guidelines.

Key Tasks:

  • Provide equipment, safety, and environmental risk mitigation leadership
  • Provide engineered solutions to complex equipment problems
  • Identify & prioritize opportunities to improve equipment and process reliability by mining empirical data and reliability databases
  • Statistically analyze equipment and process performance to assess reliability, maintainability, and availability
  • Translate and demonstrate reliability improvements into bottom-line cost savings and top-line growth
  • Provide technical leadership at all levels of the site organization with a special emphasis interacting with Maintenance crews for a positive technical impact
  • Provide training on and facilitation of root cause failure analysis with Maintenance and Production personnel 
  • Provide training and facilitation while leading the site’s failure modes, effects, and criticality analysis (FMECA)
  • Develop, recommend, facilitate implementation of fit-for-purpose reliability strategies based on FMECA results
  • Provide “design for reliability & maintainability” input to the front-end development, detailed engineering, and execution phases of capital projects
  • Scope, develop, fund (get approval), plan, execute, manage, and close out limited-scope, reliability-focused capital and expense projects
  • Establish and update proactive and predictive maintenance tasks and schedules including but not limited to cleaning routines, lubrication program, oil analysis, vibration analysis, thermographic analysis, acoustic and ultrasonic inspections, electrical and motor analysis, machinery analysis, and frequencies for vital process and support equipment
  • Ensure equipment historical data is available for decision making processes
  • Influence the decisions to optimize spare parts carrying and inventory value/costs 
  • Develop an on-going replacement analysis and recommendation program for capital equipment based on work order and preventative maintenance histories, reliability performance, and cost
  • Provide limited design & drafting services in support of Maintenance personnel, the fabrication shop, and vendor RFQ’s
  • Become the technical expert and business owner of the plasma cutting table with its host system and user interface
  • Prepare for, attend, and influence the outcome of the weekly Maintenance Scheduling Meeting

Education and/or Experience:

  • B.S. degree in mechanical, electrical, industrial, or chemical engineering, or other related technical field from an accredited university, or an equivalent, verified combination of education and experience that satisfies the professional requirements
  • 2 to 5 years of maintenance/reliability, process, project management, or direct application of a specific engineering discipline in a heavy industrial production environment
  • Certification as a PMP, CMRP, CRL, or CRE is a plus
  • Current, professional engineering license stamp in a related engineering discipline is a plus
  • Advanced technical degree in an engineering discipline, perhaps accompanied by a business degree, business minor, or MBA is a plus
  • 10+ years of directly-related experience is a plus
  • Experienced leader or facilitator of DMAIC processes or similar PDCA cycle of continuous performance improvement is a plus
  • Six Sigma Green, Brown, or Black Belt is a plus
  • Successful US-based candidates must be fully vaccinated before the employment start date unless exempted by applicable law.
