The Position


Job Summary



A vacancy exists for a Geologist based at Melbur working Monday-Friday (7.5 hour days). The successful candidate will report to the Mines Manager with a dotted line into the Snr Mining & Res Planning Manager. 

Job focus will primarily be to the UKP mining department, which extracts approximately 8 million tonnes annually, creating in the region of 800,000 tonnes of china clay finished product and millions of tonnes of aggregate feed materials. Activities take place over an area of approximately 49 square kilometres. UKP Mining operations comprise of two main districts; Central Area and Western Area with each containing several active kaolin mines with diverse extraction techniques including wet hydraulic mining, dry mining and dredging.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

A key aspect of the role is to assist the Operation Team in achieving the required quality and quantity targets. The work is completed by regularly updating the geological map of the pits and taking regular samples to support the grade control activities. Regular updates of the grade control model will derive from these activities. The Geologist will also actively participate in pit phasing and short term planning decision processes. Part of the role is to assist in production reporting and contribute to continual improvement with key performance indicators, including reconciliation. 

Resources Estimation:

The Geologist will be responsible for modeling the deposits and estimating the relevant parameters associated with the production of kaolin ore, following industry standards and Imerys best practices. Database management is also part of the role.

Drilling Campaign activities:

Drilling campaigns will happen on a regular basis on the mine sites and will require the support of the Geologist for logging, sampling and tracking activities.

In addition to the above, for specific parts of the role there will be a requirement to be involved in, and where appropriate, to lead some other mining related projects, grade analytics, reserves and resources reporting.

Knowledge & Expertise:


  • Degree level qualified in science or engineering - geology or mining geology.

  • Direct and relevant experience working in the mining environment - production experience necessary - at least 2 years.

  • Direct and relevant experience in resource modeling/estimation in the mining environment (Brownfield).

  • Experience in multi-mine operations and industrial mineral deposits is a plus.

  • Full UK driving license.
