The Position

Geotechnical Engineer

Job Summary

The Mining Engineer (Geotechnical) will be responsible for providing regional wide guidance and governance on the geotechnical aspects of our mining sites, in addition to supporting work on mining operations, mine planning and safety.
Involved in all aspects from daily Operations support to medium - long term Mine Planning. 

  • Scope: Region wide, Asia Pacific

  • Travel: up to 50% with potentially extended site based projects as needed

Key Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Manage and promote best practice in health, safety and environment to achieve statutory legislation and company policy.

  • Conduct routine geotechnical site inspections and contribute to the Group internal Mine Safety audits.

  • Perform field work such as geotechnical investigations, engineering oversight during construction of waste dumps and stockpiles.

  • Participate in the generation of the Ground Control Management Plan.

  • Coordinate the implementation and follow-up of the geotechnical monitoring systems (such as georadars, prisms, extensometer, piezometers etc.).

  • Facilitate the collection, analysis, and interpretation of geotechnical data.

  • Manage, inspect and review slope stability data collection including rock strengths, geologic structure, groundwater conditions etc. 

  • Advise mine planning & operations personnel on geotechnical issues in the pit.

  • Assist with design of excavated slopes and remedial measures as necessary.

  • Coordinates with corporate and other consultants on geotechnical functions necessary to maintain the overall geotechnical stability of responsible sites.

  • Manage QA/QC activities on mining-related earthworks and other projects such as tailings impounds.

  • The Mining Engineer (Geotechnical) will be responsible for the management of mine engineering related projects, which at times may include the management and supervision of other team members.

Education and Experience requirements:

  • Mining Engineering degree plus Geotechnical related qualification.

  • Minimum 2-3 years of work experience related to mining geotechnics

  • Fluent in english (written and spoken)

Knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics:

  • Familiarity with modeling or mining software; such as, Surpac, MineSched, Whittle, etc.

  • Competency with stress modeling software; such as, Map3D, FLAC, RocScience, etc.

  • Strong personal computer skills with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite.

  • Good knowledge of GIS and survey software.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish relationships and facilitate work through peers, superiors, and subordinates.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities with different timelines.

  • Committed and autonomous. Organized and rigorous, pay attention to details.

  • Ability to communicate and work with all levels of management & cultures.

  • Flexible to undertake business travel both domestically and internationally to support delivery of projects.

  • Mining experience which includes familiarity with geotechnical design and rock characterization
