In support of #4402 - Sound dampening in automotive PVC plastisols.
Mica is widely used for sound dampening. To develop methods to quantifiably assess the impact of dampening or sound blocking properties in automotive PVC plastisols that contain functional minerals using a 29mm impedance tube; to carry out a ladder study to identify optimum grade/formulation guidelines; to evaluate the impacts of PVC properties, etc. Potentially evaluate pore size and pore size distribution of optimum formulations using BET or mercury porosimetry and explore optimization of pores and pore size distribution.
The project will require developing a new protocol and analytical methods to assess dampening or sound blocking properties in automotive PVC plastisols
Potential impact of this work has an estimated commercial value of >$5.0 million
Project Description/ Deliverables:
A clear and concise report & presentation should be produced by the intern describing methodology and their findings. A marketing-styled presentation will be produced from these results.
Project Learning Objectives:
The intern(s) is expected to develop independent observation/thinking, project management skills, analytical skills, plastisols formulation and mineral application experience in automotive PVC plastisols.

We are looking for interns who are:
Recent Graduate with BS or MS Chemistry / Mat Sci / Chem Eng. Or an Undergrad entering their final year of either degree program
Have excellent oral and written communication skills
Love to solve problems in a collaborative environment
Are legally authorized to work in the U.S. without the need for current or future work authorization or visa sponsorship for employment
Will pass a drug screen and background investigation
