The Position

Internship - Mechanical Engineer

Job Summary

Mechanical Engineer Intern 

Project Name: Asset Strategy Development and Implementation

Project Duration: 3months 

Paid Internship: The pay rate for this internship is commensurate with the candidate's years of schooling and major. The pay scale is between $15 - $26 per hour.


  • Pursuing a Degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred

  • Coursework Prerequisites: Preference for an intern who has progressed to their program's later stages (degree-specific) portion.  Example coursework: static and dynamic systems, machine design, statistics.

Location: Marble Hill, GA with Travel to sites


Define and begin implementation of asset care best practices for a critical equipment type (dust collectors) to minimize unplanned downtime at optimal maintenance cost.


Lead the development and initial implementation of a cross-site strategy for the care of Imerys PMA North America’s dust collectors, including preventive maintenance steps, rebuild steps, and spare parts.

The project steps will include:

  • Identifying dust collectors and their key attributes across PMA North America sites,

  • Identifying existing asset care practices within the business, in collaboration with site maintenance personnel

  • Researching known best practices within the industry,

  • Developing a preventive maintenance (PM) checklist template, recommended spare parts strategy, and outage strategy

  • Selecting a site and dust collector for initial implementation

  • Working with the selected site’s maintenance personnel to validate and trial the PM checklist, implement the spare parts strategy, and trial the outage strategy (outage schedule and time permitting)

Depending on the successful candidate’s location, there may be some potential for travel to multiple sites to execute the project.


Following the internship, the successful intern will be able to apply their skills and knowledge to solve practical operational issues encountered in mineral processing.  

They will:

  • Understand the functionality and key attributes of critical mineral processing equipment (what the equipment does and how)

  • Understand common issues that can cause the equipment to not function properly (what can go wrong)

  • Apply statistical techniques to operational and maintenance data to understand sources of unplanned equipment downtime (what has gone wrong)

  • Identify activities that can prevent, identify, or mitigate unplanned downtime events (how to stop it, detect it, or manage it)

  • Incorporate new or modified activities into existing management systems (make it happen)
