The Position

Group Mining & Resource Planning – Geotechnical Manager

Job Summary

NB: The creation of this position is a result of the transformation project which is currently undergoing an information-consultation process with employee representatives. The publication of this position is part of the transformation project an shouldn't be considered as final. The objective is for employees whose positions no longer exist in the new proposed organization to identify potential new roles that they could benefit from once the information consultation process is finalized.

MISSIONS

The Group COE will report directly to ​Group Mining and Resource Planning VP, he/ she has the mission to create, over time, the environment for the BAs to deliver by :

  • Making sure the right people are selected group wide and supporting the building of capabilities

  • Bringing expertise to the BAs (via projects, training, etc ), in particular on, Geotechnical  assessment, slope stability and Mining Safety (including MSSF)

  • Adapting systems & support levels based on outcomes

  • Ensuring Group systems, such as the PERC reporting system, are used correctly

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Be the “Group COE: Mining & Resource Planning’s” first point of contact for BA personnel with respect to the Mine Engineering, Mine Planning, MSR/MSSSF, Operational Practices and Reserve Estimations issues
  • Ensure the safe and sustainable utilization of BA mineral assets for the short, mid and long term through clear functional (dotted) reporting lines to the BA “Competent Persons”,  and site engineers/managers

  • Interact with multiple levels & functions of the BA’s organization to make sure our assets are well managed

  • Provide comprehensive technical assistance to optimize mine designs mine plans and asset value.

  • Promote the use of appropriate & advanced methodologies, software & tools in MRP activities within the BA

  • Deliver skills development tools, techniques & methodologies to the BA’s mining professionals

  • Participate in the BA’s recruiting process for BA Mining Engineer positions (BA COE & mine sites)

  • Oversee the reporting of the BA’s Mineral Reserve status in accordance with the PERC guidelines

  • Lead and monitor high-priority MRP improvement initiatives and projects within the BA

  • Lead the development of systems and workflows related to geotechnical assessments, pit design, slope stability, stockpiling, berm & impoundment stability within the BA and globally

  • Lead and conduct audits and peer reviews globally of mine designs, ground control & mine operations

  • Participate in due diligence studies

  • Review and approve BA capital expenditure: BA overburden, fleet, etc & Group geotechnical related

  • Be the global expert in and provide global support in all geotechnical fields, mine design & impound stability

  • Complex technical project work to support BA (up to 20%)

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • PERC compliance of mineral reserves
  • MSR and MSSF safety, Geotechnical and ground control systems

  • Governance of : mineral resource & mineral reserve estimations, mining operational practices/safety, MSSF

  • Skills development : number of seminars/training sessions organized, levels of in-house expertise.

COMPETENCIES

  • Strong influencer 
  • Transversal and direct leadership

  • Expertise in rock & soil mechanics, slope stability, mine design and mining safety (including MSSF)

  • Proven ability to determine slope stability factors of safety

  • Strong technical auditing and report writing skills

  • Good knowledge of all Mining aspects (Safety, Production, Quality, Planning etc)

  • Good knowledge in functional communities development and management 

  • Ability to adapt to different cultures

  • Ability to promote Imerys values

EXPERIENCE

  • Degree qualified Geotechnical Engineer or related field
  • 10+ years experience in Geotechnical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years in mining

  • Multi-commodity, multi-mining technique experience that includes site based roles.

  • Previous roles such as mine geotechnical engineer, mine engineer

TYPICAL PROFILE

  • Senior Geotechnical Engineer or Mining Engineer in an international company or Mine Manager in a BA.
  • Able to travel up to 50% of the time (up to 20% being outside of the BA)
