The Position

Operator - Utility / Production

Job Summary

Location: Sandersville, Georgia

Position: Production Operator - Utility

Purpose: : Perform designated duties throughout the plant and supplement work force in production processes for continuous operation.

Duties & Responsibilities in Accordance with Operating Procedures and Work Instructions: Perform work coverage for production process positions (Assistant and Operators) to include controlling machines/processes while monitoring processes, materials and surroundings; inspecting equipment, structures, and material; communicating with supervisor and other workers to include receiving/giving information on the process; and making decisions and solving process issues. This work coverage requires training in all production process centers.

Additional Tasks:

Inspects and prepares process equipment and work area for operation (including set up and adjustments to machine controls)

  • Clean equipment and work areas
  • Collect samples of production for laboratory analysis
  • Communicate processing instructions to other workers
  • Connect product hoses/pipes between processing equipment and storage tanks/containers.
  • Transport materials to equipment or containers for further processing or storage.
  • Examine product samples visually to verify qualities - clarity, cleanliness, consistency, texture, etc.
  • Maintain process data as required by operation
  • Monitor material flow or instruments to ensure optimal processing conditions
  • Remove clogs, defects, or impurities from processing equipment.
  • Wash filters and associated equipment, patch filter clothes as required, and performs other filter duties.
  • Dose S-Tanks with H2O2 as required.
  • Perform plant housekeeping/clean up (storage tanks, roads, etc.) using a high pressure water hose.
  • Operate small bag and big bag machines, stacks bags, prepares and loads bags for shipping.
  • Load/unload slurry trucks.
  • Assist with general plant maintenance, process set-up, and miscellaneous projects.
  • Maintain boilers including minor maintenance work as needed and determination of chemical cost per hour operated; test feed water and boiler water at lab to determine the correct chemical dose rate; maintain/check all pumps on boilers and all chemical tanks levels as required (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday); blow boilers down as needed on (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday); mix chemicals for boilers as needed; inventory boiler chemicals to determine boiler operating costs monthly; determine boiler usage hours monthly; record log sheets daily of boiler information/readings; inspect boiler sites for safety problems/concerns (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday)
  • Maintains wells including start up/shut down as needed; record gallon reading on each well daily; check chemical tank levels and fill tank with water as needed to make up well chemicals; check PSI on lines from wells two days per week; check lines to plant, well sites/pumps, and chemical pumps for leaks, operating problems, or safety problems/concerns; check chlorine dose rate, changes chlorine cylinders, keeps spare cylinders, returns all empty cylinders to plant, and orders replacement cylinders; test well water to insure plant is in compliance with EPA (Safe Drinking Water Act); maintain well readings for monthly reporting to EPA.
  • Wear appropriate safety protection, follows prescribed safety guidelines, and maintains clean and safe work area.
  • Perform other duties assigned by management.

Working Conditions: Require some rotating shift work and some overtime. Perform work both indoors and outdoors and is exposed to seasonal climate variations. Require climbing to heights of 100 ft. Travel in cramped quarters and on slippery surfaces, also on top of and around railcars. Exposed to noise, dust, fumes, chemicals, allergens, darkness, brightness, and radiation.

Education: Able to read, write, and do basic math at high school or equivalent level. Experience - (Preferred Background): Prior experience in hydrous process operator positions. Qualified trainer will provide instructions/training for chemical mixing procedures, and procedures and work instructions for other assigned areas.

Skills Requirement: Able to understand written and verbal instructions and listen attentively; clearly describe conditions orally or in writing; analyze and resolve minor work problems; set-up, manipulate and tend equipment and/or machinery; drive and have a valid drivers license; use a computer; and operate a forklift.

Required Activities: Standing; working with hands, including seizing, holding, grasping, and turning; seeing, including seeing near and far vision, depth perception and field of vision, carrying objects >10 lbs. - Constantly - 85%of work time. Finger dexterity and working at a moderate pace - Frequently - 51%to 84%of work time. Lifting > 80 lb., carrying objects > 50 lbs., carrying objects <30 lbs.; walking sharp focus including color vision - Repeatedly - 20%to 50%of work time. Pushing and pulling objects, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, twisting, kneeling, crawling, reaching, repetitive motion, night vision, smelling, and working at a pace - Occasionally - up to 20%of work time.
