The Position

Railyard Operator-1

Job Summary

Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Complete pre-shift safety inspection sheet and railcar inspection sheet. Record keeping of the operation (Number of railcar, time started unloading, material type etc.).
2. Follow IMERYS safety protocols
3. Maintain a clean working environment by removing clay from train tracks and work area.
4. Verify railcar numbers to ensure accuracy based on the “Rail car report” or verbal instructions from the plant operator.
5. Connects the rail cars at the appropriate pipes so to unload each raw material in its specific silo
6. Monitor product movement to and from silos, coordinating activities with other workers to ensure constant product flow. Coordinates with maintenance personnel so that the blowers are always in good condition.
7. Weight the rail cars and keeps data by using the rail track scale.
8. Operates the company owned rail car mover (ShuttleWagon) to reposition the full and empty rail cars on the tracks.
9. After loading a rail car, checks the hatches and seals them properly. Reports to maintenance supervisor any malfunction or need for repair on the railcars.
10. Prepares and positions all the railcars that are going to be pulled out by the rail company.
11. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Skill/knowledge Requirement:
1. Communication skills required to exchange information regarding silos status with the plant operator.
2. Coordination and multitasking skills required to transfer raw materials from rail cars and trailers to multiple silos.
3. Writing and reading skills required for inspection paperwork and safety procedures. Basic knowledge of pressurized air principles.

Required Activities: Must be able to bend, stoop, climb, and balance while lifting and/or holding 50 lbs. For example: shovel clay from rail tracks, balance on railcars, lift railcar lids, and tighten/ release hand breaks on the railcars, connecting pipes and turn on and turn off valves. Operator must be able to work rotating shifts, overtime and occasionally.
