The Position

Research Technical Lab Technician

Job Summary


The role of the research laboratory technician is to engage in projects and individuals operations to complete the department goals. These can include (but are not limited to) test scheduling, material testing, equipment development, method development, new product development, new product launching, recording and storage of results and report writing. 

Occasionally the technician will provide assistance in the field or at the customer site as directed by the Technical Director and or the commercial team.

The technician will also interact and assist the Quality Manager for Level 2 complaints (which are beyond the score of normal QC testing)


Principal Accountabilities

  • Timely completion of projects, including reports.
  • Accurate and concise reporting for projects and complaints.
  • Creative ideas for new tests and methods that may be required for projects.
  • Specialized lab equipment in working order and calibrated.
  • Weekly time card submission.


  • Specialized development lab equipment and access to QA/QC equipment as necessary.
  • Other QA or development lab technicians can be utilized for work outside the hours of the project leading technician if arranged beforehand.
  • 70-402 budget for equipment and supplies necessary to carry out project work.  Company credit card and Pcard as needed.
  • Computer with internet access to purchase materials, research information and write reports.
  • Access to standard test methods and documents required for work.


The position is responsible for carrying out development projects with guidance from Technical Director or Developer.  Project plans should be developed with the TD and carried out using available resources including equipment and other technician(s) as available.

Completed projects require written reports including test results, trend analysis, statistical analysis and commentary as exemplified by KRC.

The position is responsible for the development, purchasing, maintenance, calibration and usage of specialized lab equipment not covered by the QA/QC lab.  This can also include the evolution of lab improvements as it pertains to equipment, layout and functionality.

The position is responsible for the development of new test methods with direction from the TD when needed and to coordinate the laboratory portion of a complaint investigation.  This can include the use of a QA/QC technician for routine tests like vicat set and is responsible for filing a final lab report for complaint investigations.

The position may be requested to provide occasional field support or investigation for the commercial team.  This may require travel and overnight stays.

The position is expected to maintain a 40 hr work week with a target of being at KUS during normal business hours, however scheduling may require shifting of hours outside these normal hours for required lab testing that does not fall within normal hours and should ensure that lab testing follows all applicable standards when available.

The position is responsible for shipping and receiving samples outside the standardized program handled by the QA technicians, including prototypes, etc.  The technician is responsible for recording these shipments and receipts in the proper log(s) as defined in SOP.

The position is responsible for working within the yearly departmental budget.

The position is responsible for representing the company with a technically competent and professional image to the customers when advised by Technical Director or Sales staff, responsible for following all Safety protocols and housekeeping requirements within the lab and on the plant site.  This includes proper storage of samples.  This also includes monthly safety visits.


Education and Experience:  Five years experience in the laboratory with a company involved in cementitious, powder or chemical analysis.  Experience with statistical-based analysis, laboratory equipment control and timely dissemination of results.  A Bachelors degree in a related Engineering or Chemistry field from an accredited four year university is desired however significant (>10 yrs) relevant work experience can be substituted.  Familiarization with ISO 9000 or related quality management systems is a plus.  Excellent computer skills and working knowledge of statistical methods is a plus.

Experience in electronics as applied to connecting equipment to PC’s for data acquisition a plus.

Language Skills:  Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical periodicals, professional journals, business periodicals, and material or equipment instructions, data, and safety materials.  Ability to write technical reports, business correspondence and procedure.

  • The clear communication and dissemination of results, ideas, and other facts to the appropriate persons within the company framework.


A good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Power Point, Sample Manager, Test Point and other relevant software as deemed necessary for the fulfilment of the above mentioned role. Knowledge of the Scientific method which is critical for good results. Knowledge of instrumentation and data acquisition helpful.
