The Position

Maintenance Apprentice

Job Summary

Duties & Responsibilities:

Safely perform all tasks to include following all safe access systems (LOTO, confined space, fall protection, etc.), conduct daily area inspections, and perform housekeeping in shop and all other work areas.

DAILY: Clean and lubricate shafts, bearings, gears and other parts of machinery as detailed in the lubrication schedule.

DAILY: Inspect dust collection systems and equipment for proper operation, perform minor repairs, record DPs and perform and log results of visual emissions inspections.

Inspect, operate, and test machinery and equipment in order to diagnose machine malfunctions.

Perform routine preventive maintenance to maintain basic conditions to ensure that equipment and systems continue to run smoothly, efficiently and do not deteriorate.

Diagnose mechanical problems and determine how to correct them, check drawings/blueprints, repair manuals and parts catalogs as necessary.

Adjust functional parts of devices and control instruments, using hand tools, levels, plumb bobs and straightedges.

Repair or replace defective equipment parts using hand tools and power tools and reassemble equipment.

Dismantle devices to gain access to and remove defective parts, using hoists, cranes, hand tools and power tools.

Record maintenance and repair work performed and the costs of the work in appropriate logs, spreadsheets and/or electronic formats.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Skill/knowledge Requirement:

Demonstrate a real concern for getting the job done safely and efficiently.

Make accurate diagnosis of potential equipment failures with minimum supervision.

Read, understand and work from sketches, drawings or blueprints and oral instructions with little coaching or interpretations being required.

Do a complete and thorough job of preventive maintenance on plant equipment through understanding the equipment’s function and deterioration process.

Correctly identify replacement parts in manufacturer’s catalogs and equipment list to repair or replace equipment.


 

Required Activities: Position requires 75% walking and/or standing in an industrial environment.  Will be exposed to all seasonal climatic conditions; exposed to dust, noise and uneven, sometimes slippery surfaces.  Required to climb stairs, ladders, and elevated platforms to a height of 100 ft.  Occasionally lift, carry, push and/or pull objects up to 100 lbs.  Occasionally operate company pickup truck, forklifts, scissors lift, boom truck and other mobile equipment.  Effectively communicate with operators, maintenance, QA, and supervisors.  

Education/Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent and 5 years experience working within an industrial environment.
