Healthier, hardier plants with our mineral nutrients
Bioavailable Silicon
Our ranges of Diatomaceous Earth (DE) and wollastonite provide bioavailable silicon to plants. Silicon is the second-most-abundant element in the Earth’s crust, however, not all forms can be used by plants. We’ve tested different mineral sources from across our mineral portfolio and identified optimal solutions that can provide bioavailable silicon to plants, addressing uptake mechanisms, both inside and outside of the plant organism.
Silicon is not widely recognised as an essential element for plants as most will grow normally without it. However, the beneficial effects of plant-available silicon have been observed in a wide variety of plant species.
Genes in the plants’ roots facilitate active silicon uptake. Bioavailable silicon is then translocated from the roots to the leaves where SiO2 is incorporated into the leaf tissue as phytoliths. Phytoliths are rigid, microscopic structures made of silica that provide a structural and protective role against fungi, insects and herbivores.
Key benefits provided by plant-available silicon
- Healthier plants
- Reduced disease pressure
- Improve stress resistance (biotic and abiotic)
- Longer shelf life
- Better yield
- OMRI listed

Our plant-available silicon products can be applied as a foliar spray or directly to the soil using ground equipment or irrigation systems, can be incorporated into most spray tank mixes, and can be directly mixed in the growing blends.

Imerys U.S. dolomitic lime provides pH control and secondary macronutrients, calcium, and magnesium to plants
Calcium and magnesium are secondary macronutrients for plants. In the absence of these mineral elements, plants will not grow to their full potential.
Soil that is deficient in magnesium leads to a reduction in yield and has a higher susceptibility to plant disease. Phosphorus is an essential macronutrient that enhances the growth of plants and impacts the development of roots, flowers, seeds and fruit. Phosphorus readily binds with calcium to form calcium phosphate, however, calcium phosphate is insoluble in water and does not get absorbed by plants. Calcium binds the phosphorus, but magnesium phosphate is readily absorbed by plants.
The ideal pH range for most crops is 6.5-7. In that range, there is maximum availability of nutrients for crop growth. In addition, this pH range reduces the solubility of potentially toxic elements like manganese, aluminum and iron.
The activity of soil microbes is optimized in the 6.5-7 pH range, facilitating the release of more nitrogen, phosphorus, boron and sulfur.
