The Research Behind Imerys: Driving materials science excellence through synergy and resource efficiency
Imerys continues its global journey through "The Research Behind" series, offering an expert-led look into the innovations shaping a more sustainable industry. Episode 6 highlights the groundbreaking work being conducted at the Imerys Technology Center in Tianjin, where the Group is addressing global challenges in energy storage and material circularity.
Advanced battery technology
The Group is currently demonstrating the technical feasibility of Lithium Lanthanum Zirconium Oxide material for all-solid-state lithium batteries (LLZO solid electrolytes). Led by S&T Engineer Chengjian Li, this project focuses on process intensification—reducing thermal steps and material waste—to ensure that next-generation battery components are both scalable and sustainable.
Enabling the circular economy
Sustainability at Imerys is data-driven. Lab Supervisor Ting Jiang discusses the evolution of high-efficiency nutrient and mineral solutions, such as the ReMined® range. By implementing waste-reuse technologies at the source, the Group is significantly reducing landfill impact while providing high-performance recycled minerals for the construction sector.
The role of artificial intelligence
Looking ahead, the Group is integrating AI models to hypothesize and design experiments. At the Tianjin lab, AI is already utilized to analyze SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) imagery at speeds exceeding human capability, positioning Imerys as a technical enabler for the industries of tomorrow.
