Plastics for wire & cable

Our minerals improve the flame retardant properties of wire and cable while adding other beneficial properties and reducing overall costs.
Wires

Cable that can stand the heat

If you’re producing wire and cable, you need to consider flame retardant properties. Our minerals make excellent partial replacements for flame retardants in wire and cable applications such as PE, EVA and APP helping you to reduce costs with natural mineral alternatives.

Calcined kaolin not only imparts excellent insulation properties but also provides very smooth surface finish and excellent dimensional control, while our air float kaolin range is designed for use in cable insulations as a versatile mineral filler.

Our mica grades make cost-effective replacements for ammonium polyphosphate halogen-free flame retardants for polyolefins commonly used to meet UL94 VO requirements. They can improve dielectric formation and boost char formation while maintaining mechanical properties. The Suzorite mica range is also ideal for improving dielectric formation in PVC cables.

Our mica:

  • improves dielectric formation
  • boosts char formation
  • maintains mechanical properties

Our Ensaco® carbon blacks are a special family of electrically conductive carbon blacks, produced through a proprietary method, that delivers extremely pure products with many advantages over conventional alternatives.

Ensaco conductive carbon blacks are the solution of choice for conductive and antistatic plastics compounds. Used in combination with other additives, they also provide electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding.

For customers outside the USA and Canada, our range of talcs* make an ideal partial replacement for MDH and ATH in EVA compounds for flame retardant applications, reducing your compound costs. Imerys talcs form a diffusion barrier that limits gas emission and oxygen diffusion resulting in delayed combustion, while creating a physical barrier effect limiting heat and mass transfer. For more stringent requirements, Imerys high aspect ratio HAR® talc provides an outstanding intumescent effect which retards fire ignition and protects the EVA from combustion. This intumescence is mainly due to the conjunction of heterogeneous bubble nucleation, barrier effect, increased viscosity and char promotion.
