As a company with around 17,000 employees across over 40 countries, our operations and products have an impact on the world around us. We strive to be a responsible business and a force for positive change, in terms of how we do business and how we treat our employees and the communities where we’re present. We also aim to make our products as sustainable as possible, both in how they are produced and by offering sustainable solutions to our customers.
It goes without saying that we respect the spirit and the letter of the laws of every country in which we operate. But we are committed to go further. We, as a company, must adhere to the most demanding international codes of corporate conduct, such as the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
Our strong corporate governance ensures that we operate ethically in a rapidly evolving global business environment. The Imerys Code of Business Conduct and Ethics sets out the ethical business direction we and our business partners, including suppliers, must show to sustain our industry leadership and ensure that safety, sustainability, ethics, innovation and profitability go hand in hand.
Suppliers must comply with our Supplier Environmental Social and Governance Standards if they want to work with Imerys.
We undertake a systematic approach to identifying our stakeholders, and we engage with the communities where we operate in a number of ways.
For example, through our commitment to education we aim to tackle illiteracy, encourage the education of women and girls and support young adults to make them more employable.
We want to ensure our product portfolio is as sustainable as possible, not just to limit environmental impacts but also because responsible product management helps us develop new business opportunities.
We use our technological expertise to continuously make our operations more efficient, and are always looking to create new products that will help meet the challenges of global megatrends such as climate change and resource scarcity.
We have started using a tool to assess how sustainable our products are, both in terms of how producing them affects the environment from a life cycle assessment perspective and how they align with long term sustainability market trends.
This tool allows us to quantify key environmental impacts linked to the operational footprint of our products, as well as identify opportunities to develop new solutions that can address unmet social and environmental needs.
We need everyone at all levels of Imerys and in our value chain to be engaged in building for the future. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UN Global Compact provide a framework that everyone can rally round. By signing up to the Global Compact, we have committed to contributing to a number of the SDGs in Human Rights, Labour, Environment, and Anti-corruption.
Working towards these goals will help us reduce our risks, find new business opportunities and make our business more sustainable for the long term.
