With 12 production sites for fused alumina, we are the market leader in this industry. Fused alumina is used in grinding, blasting, and cutting operations and to produce refractory materials.
Fused aluminas: the powerhouse of abrasives
We are proud to say that we are the world’s largest producer of fused alumina, also known as fused aluminum oxide. Since production started in 1943 in Villach, Austria, we have expanded to 12 production sites for aluminum oxides worldwide, making us the market leader in this industry, selling under the well-known brand and industry-standard Alodur® fused alumina.
The process of manufacturing fused aluminum oxide was developed at the end of the 19th century and involves smelting calcined bauxite and alumina in electric arc furnaces by electrothermal fusion at temperatures of around 2000°C. The resultant fused aluminum oxides are synthetic hard minerals based on α-aluminum oxide.
Fused aluminum oxides show a value of 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness close to diamond (Mohs 10), the hardest known substance. Besides their superior hardness, the characteristics of fused aluminum oxides include sharp-edged grains, great load bearing capacity, a high degree of shock resistance and thermal and chemical stability.
Because of this, our Alodur fused aluminas are well suited for use in many different industries such as abrasives, refractories, sandblasting etc. Fused aluminum oxide grits are put to use in grinding, machining, blasting, cutting operations and for the production of shaped or unshaped refractory materials.
We offer a wide range of Alodur fused aluminum oxide based products, both macro and micro sized, for a wide range of applications. To satisfy all varying demands, we are capable of implementing additional refining steps to our standard production, in order to meet customized requirements of the different industries and application fields such as blasting media, bonded abrasives, coated abrasives, concrete & resin components, foundry coatings, fused cast blocks, insulator & heat conductive composites, investment casting, laminates and paintings, metal matrix composites, refractories & ceramics, sand casting and tiles and enamels.
